Project steps:
The design and population of the database was carried out by preparing a series of base maps at 1:10,000 scale, obtained through field surveying, photointerpretation and critical compilation of existing data. The primary thematic maps produced were : lithology, morphology, slope, hydrology and permeability, land use (with special concern to vegetation), climate. Derivative maps were: hydrogeological instability and hazard, suitability to productive soil use, environmental degradation, naturalistic and landscape relevant sites, evaluation of water resources.
The comparative analysis of all the above-mentioned themes led to the production of a synthesis document: the Geo-environmental map, where land is divided in homogeneous units, each one described in datasheets (GEO1, GEO2, GEO3) containing all the elements of the various themes inside a particular area.
The Geo-environmental map is a set of homogeneous data that can be used for land planning, for feasibility studies both over large areas (dumps or quarries, watersheds, reforestation, etc.) and for specific local actions.
All the cartographic data acquired and produced were stored as ArcInfo coverages according to themes, following the rules of the Lombardia Region SIT, while the alphanumeric data were saved in the above-mentioned datasheets.
